Project Overview

Challenge

I was tasked with designing a mobile app concept targeted at investors, including a mini brand refresh. The design needed to encompass SOMM TV’s existing streaming service, as well as additional educational opportunities and personalized features for their user base of wine enthusiasts. It was also important to demonstrate the potential for additional revenue streams.

I was the sole designer on this project which involved a mini brand refresh, UX/UI design, and a high-fidelity prototype. I worked directly with SOMM TV’s Founder & CCO Jason Wise and Editorial Director Nadine Nettmann.

Solution

My strategy involved integrating SOMM TV’s award-winning media with engaging social and e-commerce capabilities to create a personalized environment rich with opportunities to learn, share, and discover. This included interconnectivity between features for a cohesive, convenient, and immersive user experience, as well as a unique virtual sommelier experience to take personalized recommendations to the next level.

Mini Brand Refresh

After an initial workshop to gather insight, I presented the client with two design directions. The concept for Direction 1 was a classic style evoking intimate gatherings and a closeness to nature, while Direction 2 was a more vibrant, contemporary approach meant to diverge from conventional branding used within the wine domain.

The client preferred Direction 1.

Watch, learn, shop

The SOMM TV app lets you watch and buy seamlessly. Easily find the products featured in videos you watch – or conversely see any video(s) a particular product has been featured in – and get personalized product recommendations based on your viewing activity.

Product detail pages feature quick video overviews from sommeliers, as well as additional resources on the geography and varietals.

Virtual Somm

Scan a restaurant’s wine list and let the Virtual Somm make personalized wine recommendations based on your views, reviews, and Cellar on the app. Easily filter and learn more about the recommended wines, and read friends’ reviews to help make your choice.
